August 68

SINEWY Henry let his ladies hang

down from his arms, in arabesques, whilst he

sought formulas for them.

Great was his physical pain, he grimly sang,

at many points, but others’ agony

was greater still. A stratagem

surfaced: O let them all be married off,

but two would not. In mental pain he dared

anyone, under the sky.

Some slid away & children had. Enough!

he cried, I have grief more than I have shared,

into the innocent eye.

Long lost sight of, the two & Henry danced

in a London masquerade. He took a rook,

and that was good for his side.

His brain was pierced, at which the others glanced.

Sat Henry’s lady down with Henry’s book,

Henry’s sorrow & pride.
